Our recommendations :

We recommend ProfileÔ  for gardening success:

ProfileÔ A kiln-fired porous ceramic from a unique mineral deposit in Mississippi. Each particle is 74% pore space with 39% capillary (water) pores and 35% non-capillary (air) pores. It increases the water and nutrient holding capabilities and the air and drainage pores–permanently improving most soils.  Originally formulated for use in putting greens to keep moisture and drainage in balance, it is also excellent to maintain moisture in ornamental containers and flower beds.

We recommend the addition of ProfileÔ to ProMix potting soil for excellent moisture retention without damage from excess watering. Add 1 cup ProfileÔ for each gallon of soil and mix thoroughly before planting.

Unlike polyacrylimide gel materials, which swell and shrink with moisture, ProfileÔ maintains its original sand like size and shape, wet or dry. Even when dried out, it can’t leave roots exposed to extra air pockets, and is not toxic to feeding birds.

ProMixÔ is our basic potting soil. It is formulated in Canada of Canadian spaghnum peat moss, perlite and vermiculite. We avoid bark based soils because bark pulls nitrogen during decomposition, requiring more fertilizer. Plants grown in bark based soils seem to yellow exhibit more yellowing and just don’t thrive in the home environment unless maintained on constant liquid feed. ProMixÔ BX is the all purpose formula. We also offer “TA” which is finer milled and has a higher pH for tomatoes, and HP which retains less moisture for plants that need to dry out quicker.

Mushroom Compost is recycled from commercial mushroom growing beds. It is softer and less compacted than cow manure, and we have found it to be the best additive to our sandy soils. It aids in moisture retention, adds gentle nutrients without burning, and forms the optimum environment for plant roots. It should be incorporated into the soil prior to planting, and can be used in containers with ProMixÔ. In containers, our recommended ratio is 1 part Mushroom Compost to 5 parts ProMixÔ.

Fertilizer works!!!

For dry applications, try Osmocote 14-14-14 applied at planting and every 3 months through out the growing season. For liquid feeding, we like DynaGroÔ Bloom. DynaGroÔ products are urea free, avoiding salt build up in containers.

For over 40 years, our family has grown garden plants for the Sandhills.

With humble beginnings in Mrs. Oldham's back yard, we've maintained the tradition of seeding, cutting and propagating annuals, perennials and vegetable plants for seasonal gardening. Over the years,  the varieties have changed. New and improved varieties have taken the place   of some of the older ones and as your needs have changed, so has our offering. Our geraniums have made their way to Hilton Head and Hyannis Port, but most stay right here in Moore County.
